Van Gogh—The Moored Canoes Poster

Vincent van Gogh painted *The Moored Canoes* in 1887 during his time in Paris, while working in the Asnières area along the banks of the Seine. At that time, he was living north of Paris with his brother Theo, exploring the riverbanks and suburban landscapes close to the city rather than traveling far afield. His contact with avant-garde painters such as Signac and Émile Bernard in Asnières played a significant role in his shift away from his dark Dutch palette toward lighter blues, pinks, and oranges. The contrast between the tranquility of the boats moored along the shore and the fragmented color strokes on the water and sky clearly illustrates Van Gogh’s Paris years, during which he began to develop his own artistic language.
