Van Gogh-Verger Aves Cypres Poster

Vincent van Gogh painted *Verger avec Cyprès / Orchard Bordered by Cypresses* in Arles in April 1888. That spring, he was so absorbed in the blooming fruit trees that he produced fourteen paintings on this subject in a short period of time. This work also marks one of Van Gogh’s first serious encounters with cypress trees; captivated by their shapes and deep colors, he would transform them into one of the most powerful symbols of his Saint-Rémy period a few years later. In a letter to his brother, he describes this garden as featuring yellow reed fences, a shelter built to withstand the Mistral wind, black cypresses, and vegetables in various shades of green; while he viewed the brushwork—which he found irregular and “disturbing”—as part of a conscious artistic quest.
