Van Gogh—Wheat Field with Cypresses Poster

Vincent van Gogh painted *Wheat Field with Cypresses* in the summer of 1889, while he was staying at the mental hospital in Saint-Rémy. By that time, cypress trees had become an almost obsessive motif for him; he had written that he found them as impressive as Egyptian obelisks. Van Gogh regarded this painting as one of his “best” summer landscapes; in fact, he was so pleased with the first version that he later created two more studio variations of the same composition. The golden-yellow wheat, dark cypress trees, and wave-like clouds transform the Provençal landscape from a serene rural scene into something with an almost cosmic movement.
