Van Gogh-Roses Poster

Vincent van Gogh painted *Roses* in May 1890, just a few weeks before his discharge from the mental hospital in Saint-Rémy. In those days, he had returned to painting flowers with almost obsessive intensity, writing to his brother Theo that he was working “frenetically” on large bouquets of roses and purple irises. The roses, which appear white today, were actually pink at first; the work took on a completely different color as the pigment he used faded over time. He had applied the paint so thickly that the painting hadn’t dried by the time Van Gogh left Saint-Rémy, so it was left behind and could only be sent to him weeks later.
