Van Gogh – Olive Trees Poster

Vincent van Gogh painted *The Olive Trees* in the summer of 1889, while he was staying at the mental hospital in Saint-Rémy. What is interesting is that he conceived of this painting during the same period as his famous *The Starry Night*, almost as if it were its daytime counterpart; in a letter to his brother Theo, in which he mentioned both paintings together, he wrote that rather than copying nature as he saw it, he had deliberately exaggerated the lines and colors. For this reason, the twisting olive trees, the Alpilles hills, and the sky dissolved in light convey a sense of nature that is dynamic and alive, rather than that of a tranquil Provençal landscape.
