5 Decorating Ideas to Make a Small Living Room Feel More Spacious

A small living room furnished with light-colored sofas, sheer curtains hung high on the walls, a large rug, and simple accessories.

In small living room decor, a sense of spaciousness isn’t achieved simply by choosing light colors. The arrangement of furniture, the way light enters the room, and open spaces where the eye can rest all work together. What’s more, you can achieve a more comfortable look without replacing all your furniture.

1. Keep walkways clear

Check the path from the door to the couch and the window. A pouf, side table, or small cabinet placed along this path can make it difficult to use the living room. Before buying new furniture, rearrange what you already have; try to create a layout where you don’t have to constantly change direction as you walk.

2. Soften color transitions on large surfaces

Using similar shades on the walls, curtains, and sofa can help the room feel more cohesive. You don’t have to paint everything white: off-white, sand, and light gray can also be considered together. Add a more distinct color with a pillow or a single accessory. Evaluate your paint choice on a small sample under both daytime and evening lighting.

3. Lighten the area in front of the window

Gather the heavy curtains on either side of the window during the day; try moving any tall objects in front of the window to another spot. Starting the curtain slightly above the window can draw the eye upward. A light curtain that reaches all the way to the ceiling is an option you can consider, especially in living rooms with low ceilings.

4. Choose a rug that matches your seating area

A very small rug placed in the center on its own can break up a seating arrangement. Try arranging the furniture so that the front legs of the chairs rest on the rug. Before you buy, mark the dimensions you have in mind on the floor; also check the door opening and the walkway.

5. Don’t fill the wall and the side table at the same time

Instead of filling every empty space with an accessory, choose a focal point. If you’re using a poster on the wall, leave some space around it; a few carefully chosen objects on the side table may be enough. To start, take a photo of the living room from the entrance. Simplify the three cluttered areas that catch your eye at first glance. In a small room, the most effective change is sometimes to declutter the existing arrangement before adding anything new.
