Where to Hang a Horizontal Poster: 3 Living Room Ideas

A horizontal poster doesn’t have to get lost on a wide wall. When placed in the right spot, it creates a cohesive focal point alongside the furniture. There are three spots in the living room that make it easy to decide where to hang it: above the console table, behind the sofa, and in the dining area.
Center the poster above the console table
The wall above a console table or low cabinet is a good starting point for a horizontal poster. Position the artwork not relative to the entire wall, but relative to the centerline of the furniture below it. If the poster appears wider than the furniture, the balance may be disrupted; leaving a little space on either side creates a more serene effect. Keep it close enough to the console to establish a connection with its bottom edge, but not so close that it feels cramped between the vase and the lamp on top.
Use the sofa as your reference
If the sofa is placed against a wall, the horizontal orientation should follow the width of the seating area. Here, too, use the center of the sofa as your reference point rather than placing the poster exactly in the middle of the wall. Don’t judge eye level only while standing: it’s more important for the image to be comfortably visible when you’re seated, as this is how it’s used in daily life. Also, make sure a nearby lamp or tall plant isn’t blocking the frame.
Check the sightline in the dining area
The empty wall next to the dining table can serve as a second focal point in the living room. When viewed from the table, the entire poster should be visible; it should not be obstructed by an open door, a curtain, or a cabinet door. When choosing a color, it is sufficient to echo a shade found in the room’s fabrics or ceramics. Not every detail needs to match exactly.
Before hanging the poster, mark its outer dimensions on the wall with a piece of paper and step back a few paces. This will help you visualize the height, its relationship to the furniture, and the spacing. For a horizontal poster arrangement, the best result is achieved when the image appears balanced not just on its own, but within the room as a whole.
