Van Gogh – Carafe and Dish Poster

Vincent van Gogh painted *Carafe and Dish with Citrus Fruit* in Paris in 1887, during a period when he was intensively experimenting with color theory. An ordinary pitcher, a few citrus fruits, and a patterned background transform, in his hands, into a small laboratory where he tests color relationships. During his years in Paris, Van Gogh sought to create a more powerful vibrancy by placing complementary colors side by side; in this work, the yellow fruits, the turquoise-green table, and the warm orange tones sharpen each other’s impact. What is interesting is that the artist even chose the color of his signature in a way that heightens the tension within the composition.
