Van Gogh – Flowering Orchards Poster

Vincent van Gogh painted this view of Arles, known as *Flowering Orchards*, in the spring of 1889; the work is also listed in museum records as *View of Arles* / *Blick auf Arles*. The dark tree trunks in the foreground almost act as a curtain between the city and the blossoming orchards. This composition also suggests a shift in Van Gogh’s perspective on Arles and its surroundings following the mental crises he was experiencing at the time: while the distant city and the bright colors of spring appear within reach, the heavy trunks in the foreground divide the scene, creating a vague sense of distance. The sharp framing and unexpected cuts he learned from Japanese prints also lend this landscape an unusual tension.
