Van Gogh—River Bank in Springtime Poster

Vincent van Gogh painted *River Bank in Springtime* in 1887 while living in Paris, as he was working outdoors along the banks of the Seine. During these years, he had formed close ties with Impressionist and Neo-Impressionist painters and had even experimented with the pointillist technique for a time; however, he found its strict rules too restrictive. In this painting, the green riverbank vegetation shimmers with pink and red accents; Van Gogh uses the tension of complementary colors to transform a tranquil riverbank into an intense and vibrant surface. The work is one of the key examples of the period when he moved away from his dark Dutch palette in Paris toward a brighter, more experimental painterly style.
